Christmas just isn't for Kids

Here is story told to us by a happy customer.....

He came in to the store the another day to pick up his son's Christmas present, a new bike and told Greg that it needed to be boxed because they were travelling interstate for Christmas to see family. So as Greg was packing the bike he started to chat...

His son asked how Greg and Greg knew Santa and why the elves did not build the bikes. So dad started to explain, that a combination of layoffs with the global economy and the expertise needed to build bikes, Santa and the Gregs were working together. But as you know children have a craving to know more... and dad was starting to feel he was slipping into a hole which could be very difficult to get out. So dad tried to cut it off with, "I can't say to much about Greg "(Red Greg) and his son looked confused.

"What do you mean dad?" Dad just repeated " I can't say to much" and gave him a look.

The son replied incredulously " Dad, do you mean that Greg is an elf?"

The dad repeated again " I can't say to much, but maybe next time check out his ears"

So couple days later when they were in the shop, the boy stood and stared and stared at Greg's ears for a very long time. The dad had a chuckle to himself. Later the son said "Hey dad, I didn't see any pointed ears on Greg". "Well son, you can't be to obvious can you" replied dad.

At the end of the story, our customer said " I love surprising my kids at Christmas and keeping Santa alive". This customer like many others got joy and laughter from making his children happy and having the spirit of Christmas.

We love to hear these stories and are glad to be apart of making Christmas wishes come true.

Long Sunday Ride with the Trailblazers

I adventured out on one of the Trailblazers (our local Mountain Bike Club) long Sunday Ride yesterday, and had a great time. The group of thirteen who consisted of young guns, some sporty gals, father and son dudes and just some keen guys out for a mountain bike ride, rode about 50kms in Noosa's bush terrain. Lester, our leader warned us it was going to to be long, we went all the way around Lake Weyba from Tewantin National Park to Peregian Beach (stopping for refreshments) and back through Lake Weyba and Doonan to Tewantin again. We had some challenging climbs through sand on the east side with the blazing sun bearing down on us, but there was always encouraging words from our fearless leader and friendly companions.

Once we arrived at Peregian Beach, we all refueled with cold drinks or coffee, then set off again. Richard Poyner showed us some wicked trails (some of which were single tracks- we love s/tracks) with some low lying seed pods that became missiles when hit hard (Paula and her fat lip will vouch for that).

I really enjoyed getting out on my Specialized Carbon 29 Fate, we rode well together, mixing it up with the front fast crew. It's great for speed, rolling and having a blast and even handled whatever the sand threw at it!

Our professional mechanics are friendly and knowledgeable and are always keen and willing to get you back on your bike.

Start of the race

The Noosa 000 was held on Saturday 2nd October at Pomona State School and the riders and supporters were lucky to have clear skies and a fast and dry track. At times the wind was a challenge but that did not damper the mood, everyone had a great time. It was an 8 hour event on a 14km circuit covering fire road and single track.

Cognition, a proud sponsor was happy to be part of a great cycling community event, with local and non local riders coming to take part to raise valuable funds for such a great charity, the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation.

Congratulations to all the Noosa Trailblazers and local Sunshine Coast riders, there was some great results and achievements made. Chris Pearson finished in 2nd place in the Solo division with 13 laps and 2 person team, Team Cognition consisting of Justin Thompson and Greg Long fought hard for 3rd position against a very strong team, Ausmar Homes. After 8 hours and 15 laps, the two teams were side by side with 500 metres to go, with a final burst of energy, Greg edged ahead and crossed the line first. It was great to see the two teams shake hands and congratulate each other on a hard fought race which both teams really enjoyed.

It seems only fitting to mention Lester Manning and Garth Kellett who rode solo for the 8 hours and finished with 11 laps each. Both kept challenging themselves to keep going out for another lap. Lester said about the challenge, "This is nothing compared to what the children in the hospital go through everyday".

Sunshine Series Round 2 XCE at Adare, Gatton

It was hot, very hot and dusty but the riders from the Sunshine Coast came and conquered. The Noosa crew rode hard and pushed through the heat and terrain to get some awesome results.
In the 2 person division, Jack Jude and Dean Madden (Team Specialized) came 2nd, Zack Agius and Sean Bekkers (Team Ay-Up Racing Elite) 3rd, Ethan Kelly and Garth Kellet (Team Ay-Up Racing) 4th and Greg Long and Dylan Teakle (Team Cognition) came in 6th.
The solo efforts of Jono Noble and Dave Whisker, "The Captain" were amazing with both completing 8 laps each, they were able to feed of each other and kept on going.

A big thank you goes to the parents and family members who traveled the distance and handled the heat to help support the teams, it was greatly appreciated.

Noosa Triple 000, Mountain Bike Challenge

Are you up for the challenge?

Have you already registered and training hard, remember you can be sponsored for the event or make a direct donation and raised money for the great charity, The Royal Children's Hospital Fund.

Last year this event attracted over 200 riders, supporters and sponsors who raised over $20,000.00 which goes to improving and helping the lives of some very sick Queensland kids and their families.

The event starts at 8am and finishes at 4pm with options to ride solo or in teams of 2,3,or 4. Each rider will complete a 14km loop through the state Forest. The loop consists of sweeping fire roads and single tracks.

Date: Saturday 1st October, 2011, 8am-4pm

Venue: Pomona State School (camping): route through Yurol Forest. Pomona is located in the beautiful hinterland of the Sunshine Coast off the Bruce Highway.

Cost: $70.00 per rider

Accommodation: Free camping with registration price. The school is within walking distance of the historic town of Pomona with a country pub, restaurants, kids playground and supermarket.

Cognition are proud to be a major sponsor of this event having a fully equipped and expert mechanic based at the oval during the race.

This a great event to try mountain biking, whether you are local or from near by Brisbane come up for the day or spent the night, the atmosphere is great, it will be fun whether you're there to give it a go or race hard!

Wrap up of the Noosa Winter Festival 2011- Century Ride

What a great event, USM did a awesome job putting this years Winter Festival together and with Cognition as mechanical support, the Century Ride was another success. With over 1200 riders in both the 100km and 160 km ride it was always going to be a mammoth event, but with only a few crashes and a small amount of mechanicals, the ride was a success.

The ride was very competitive with many of our customers trying to produce a personal best.

Jack Jude, 1st under 19's

Here are a few examples: Jack Jude, our sponsored rider, and local has just turned 15. He went in the 100km ride and stayed with the lead brunch, leading out on all the hill climbs (if only there was a "king of the Mountain" jersey) and staying with them the whole way. Jack rode extremely well it was in the final attack, a kilometre or 2 from the finish line that he was dropped, but with maturity and strength he rode the last kilometre on his own to finish 7th overall and 1st in the under 19's division, with a time of 2hr:30mins:23sec. He was only 11 seconds behind the winning group but was 18 minutes ahead of the 2nd place of the under 19's. Jack is continuing to improve and impress! Good work Jack.

Garth Kellet, another customer and rider in the 100km ride showed his training and the purchase of a great bike, Specialized Roubaix can give him a personal best. Garth finished 14th overall and 4th in his division (40-49) with a time of 2:39:26. With his aim to come top 20, he certainily smashed that. He commented after the race, how smooth his ride was and how good the bike felt, it was a great result- well done Garth!

In the 160km ride, there was 632 entrants with 524 finishing, it was a good ride with some tough hill climbs which made for a very competitive ride. The lead group keep a constant pace, increasing the speed till the end. The end was fast and exciting with the bunch going over line together with only 1 second separating first and second, Coiln Dick (4:21:57), local fireman coming in second. There was only 1 or 2 seconds separating the next 9 riders.

Our customers, Phil Tillotson came amazing top 10 finish (9th overall with a time of 4:21:59 and 7th in his division) and Soren Vejby came 19th overall and 4th in his division (40-49) with a time of 4:22:02. Congratulations guys!

With having mechanics at the 3 aid stations (Cooroy, Eumundi and Marcoola) and at the expo at the finish we were able to see and experience a great ride between local and visitors, where everyone enjoyed the views and the atmosphere. We loved being apart of such a great event and was glad o be able to show cyclists and visitors from a far, how great it is to cycle and holiday in NOOSA.

Australian Marathon Championships 2011 at Mt Joyce

Jack Jude's Podium finish at 14 years old

The Australian Marathon Championships were held at Mt Joyce on April 17th, and it was a great race. Jason English took out the full marathon (80kms) and was crowned the 2011 Australian Marathon Champion followed by Andrew Blair and Shaun Lewis. Anna Beck, a QLD rider crossed the line in third behind Jenny Fay (NSW) and Jenni King (VIC) after a great race.Two local riders and members of the Trailblazers MTB Club also took up the 80km marathon challenge with fantastic results. Howard McCann came 1st in the Sport Male division, Richard Poyner came 3rd in the Ultra Master Male division and Garth Kellet came 26th in Master Male division.

We had a hand full of Cognition customers and Trailblazers who entered the half marathon (43km) with some extraordinary results.

Jack Jude, 14 years old, the youngest competitor, crossed the line first and came away as the half marathon champion. Some other great results include Zack Agius (8th) and Ethan Kelly (13th) in the open half male.
Justin Thompson came 29th in veteran Male half.

Congratulations To Matt Goss- Winning the Milan- San Remo

The frantic Sprint

What a result for the 24 year old Australian rider, racing for the first time on his new S-works + McLaren Venge.
The sprint at the end was exciting with 8 elite riders all riding for the top podium finish, with Goss winning over Fabian Cancellara (Leopard Trek) and Phillippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto). " I really didn't expect to win an emotional Goss said afterwards. "I just what I needed to do. I managed to stay in front and even though I was without teammates, I managed myself well".

His only real competitor at the end was Fabian Cancellara on the other side of the road, but Goss had him covered to take a surprising but well deserved victory. " I was here to win, the team rode really well and I tried to finish that off, but didn't succeed", Cancellara said " I even tried to go alone but everyone was on my wheel. In the end I did one of the best sprints of my life but Goss was unbeatable" (Milan-San Remo 2011, Cyclingnews.com)

Bike Week 12th March- 20th March

Bike week 2011 has started... This is great time to get anyone you know who has mentioned or is keen to get out on a bike to encourage them now. There is lots happening on the Sunshine Coast during this week. The Travelsmart department of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council has developed a fanastic schedule to promote and encourage cycling in our community. We are extremely lucky to live in a beautiful place that has many cycling paths and trails to help you explore your backyard, from the coastal paths through to the Noosa Network trails in the hinterland.

Here at Cognition, cycling is our passion and one of our aims is to encourage and support more cycling in our community, whether its mountain biking in the forest, punching out the kms on a road bike, enjoying a family ride or assisting the economical and healthy commuter, we are here to help.

We believe its important to get children on bikes early, it builds confidence and ability. There is alot to offer children in the cycling community whether its bike to jump, trick, race through the mud or just get them to school in a fun and healthly way.
During Bike week, the council has it covered.

There was a great turn out at the two seminars he gave last Saturday ( Getting started in Cycling and Basic Bike Maintenance Workshop) at the Cooroy Library. The feedback has been great, everyone loved it. Thank you to Cooroy library for a great venue. The library staff have done a fanastic job with their cycling display.

Jack Jude, Our Sponsored Rider teams up with Specialized

Jack Jude has his first race of the year this weekend, the MTB National series round 3 at Mt Buller and he will be racing on his new Specialized Epic Marathon Carbon for Cognition/Specialized. Goss Gives Specialized first win of the Year

Australian sprinter Matt Goss gave Specialized its first win of the year on Sunday in Geelong, he won the first stage of the Jayco Bay Classic. Allan Davis, another specialized rider, placed third behind Goss and Chris Sutton in the sprint finish. Though supported by HTC's and Specialized's equipment, Goss travelled to Victoria with an all-Tasmanian team E3/Pure.Last year, he won a stage at the Giro d''Italia and the one day classic GP Plouay. Another exciting news from Specialized is their new partnership with HTC- Highroad team. For the 2011 season, the HTC-High Road will ride our S-Works Tarmac SL3 frames and forks for most road races, switching to the Roubaix SL3 for the cobbled classics while the women will ride the S-Works Amira.

Noosa Trail Blazers; A Long Ride

This Sunday gone the Noosa Trail Blazers Mtb club headed out to explore the Sunshine coast Hinter Land on a long ride. It was good to see a roll up of 18 at Woori and to hear that some had already been out since 5:30 getting in just a few extra kilometres.
Richard P. was our leader today and with his knowledge of the Noosa trail network second to none we all knew we were in for a treat! It was great to see that John and Sue had parked the road bikes and were keen for an MTB ride. We also had Martin and his partner from Germany looking very Euro and very Pro! His enthusiasm for hills and our trails made us all realize how lucky we are to be living on the Sunshine Coast.
Martin's attack on the 'Mother' was great to see and while he did not clear it he impressed us with his bike handling skills on the climb!
All up we had 8 riders depart at Pomona and 10 continue on to Kin Kin.
Jack did a massive Day on the MTB after a Massive day on the road bike the day before!
Ethan was stoked to find a new and harder way to Kin Kin, look out Zack!
I got to have a soak in the Pomona pool to ease my sore muscles and to help my recovery.
The next scheduled Long Club Ride is for 12th December again meeting at Woori day use area.

First Round of the National MTB Series, You Yangs Victoria

This weekend Andy, Jack and Rodger headed down to the You-Yangs just outside of Melbourne for the 1st round of the National series for 2010-2011.

With a track that Jack has described as "hard" all three Sunshine Coast riders performed well.

With Andy's goal for 2011 being Marathon races, he shook off a bad start to punch out 5 extremely consistent laps to find himself in 16th place among the top quality cross country field.

Rodger showed us that consistent laps can be beneficial, pulling off a top 10 finish, after being 15th on the first lap.

Jack Jude racing his first race in under 17's and a poor starting position made his last lap his fastest and finished 8th overall.

The podium for the elite male was Ben Henderson (1st) Aiden Lefmann (2nd) and Joshua Carlson (3rd) and for the Elite female it was Jenni King, Jodie Willett and reigning national champion Rowena Fry coming in third.

The 2nd round will be in Tasmania at Glenorchy MTB Park on December 10-12.

Dirtworks Classic Victorian MTB Race

On Sunday the 7th November, Garth Kellet, a Noosa Trailblazer and great customer raced in the Dirtworks Classic. Here is his account:

I entered the 59km masters event and took the line with 99 other riders. The race was run in the Wombat State Forest which is the home trails of the Wombat MTB club.

WOW what awesome trails. Lots of flowing single track that ducked and weaved through tall stands of forest that wanted to catch your handle bars at the slightest loss of concentration.

Lots of log rollovers (some being up to 4 feet high) and some of the longest gully crossing's over log bridges I have ever ridden. The drop off these were up to 20 feet high and really tested your nerve.....

The 50km course ended up being 57km and I finished 11th with a time of 3hr 9 mins. I finished exhausted with a very big grin on my face as the event organisers handed me a cold beer as I crossed the line.

Spare a thought for the 110km racers, the last 30 or so riders rode home in a massive hailstorm and were pelted with golf ball sized hail!. They all look liked they had been in a paint ball fight without any protective equipment.

Winners are grinners

The offical results are not up yet, but we have word of some great results. Jack Jude, Ethan Kelly and Zac Agius came first in their division (jnr 3 person) but their times would of seen them take out second in open men and 8th overall. Their lap times were fast and consistent illustrating that their riding is paying off. Congratulations guys!!!

Congrats to our staff at the Superkids Tri on Saturday morning at Noosaville, you kept all the kids riding and having a great time. It was wonderful to see such a great turnout with children ranging from 7 years to 13 years old. Our eldest daughter, Tara entered her first triathlon and had a great time with her younger sister, Keely, super keen to do it next year! Well done to all the families that took part in this fantastic event.

The QLD XC MTB State Championships, Sunday 17th October 2010

The State championships were held last weekend with some fantastic results from the local MTB club, Noosa Trailblazers. It was one of the most demanding courses of the year and was fitting that the state championships were held there. This was at Mt Crosby, west of Brisbane, its one hilly course.There was 107 riders racing for a state Championship, the Noosa Trailblazers gave it their all . The results are as follows:

National Junior Mountain Bike Development Camp

Congratulations to Jack Jude, Rodger Pogson-Manning and Declan Wharton, Noosa Trailblazers juniors for gaining places in the National Junior Bike Development Camp. This camp is aimed at preparing our MTB atheletes both male and female for the world championships and professional careers in the sport of mountain biking by introducing a long term approach to the development of Australian junior MTB athletes.
The training camp will be held this weekend at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, the coaches include National Sporting director Chris Clarke and National XC coach, Tim Ellsion.

Solo 24 Hour Worlds- Greg and Mark's Trip

I've always had a passion for seeing people do something that they are really good at, whether it is a sporting activity, an art or a career, the end result is marvellous.

As many of you know Andy Fellows is a local rider and he is really good at mountain biking, his chosen discipline is endurance racing.

This past weekend Mark Whitney and I had the opportunity to see him at his best and we were not disappointed. The 2010 Solo 24 Hour World Championships were held in Canberra at Mount Stromlo. One of Australia's premier MTB destinations. CORC, Canberra Offroad Cyclists, organised a fantastic event which drew in 1000's of people. It was an overwhelming sight to see when all these people are set up for a weekend of racing action.

Andy had raced and placed third at last year's event and was motivated and well prepared to better that placing this year. With bikes ready, nutrition and pit crew organised the race was on! Mark and I were lucky enough to have pit passes to give assistance to former Solo 24 hour age winner and Sunshine coast resident Jeff Toohey. This put us right in the action in pitt lane with all of the worlds best and the action was HOT!. Racing started from the word go and did not let up for 24 hours. When I first stopped and looked at the clock, it had been only 4.5 hours, I was wondering how they could possibly continue for another 20.
The pace was fast, the level of competition high and the Stromlo track dusty and hard!

We were impressed with the riders from Canada, the UK and Argentina. Worth noting were their pit crews, and their efficiency and knowledge of their riders and ability to convince them that they could continue on, are qualities found in the best and was a pleasure to watch.

In the end the race winner was Jason English, our man Andy was pipped on the last lap for 2nd and came home with the 3rd place medal. Andy's performance was outstanding, I only saw him get off his bike to change to his second one, I never saw him sit down or complain. He raced hard and he raced well.

I look forward to the next time I can watch him test his limits.

The Worlds Camp, Mt Stromlo

This is the Worlds Solo Championships stage... the weather at 11.45am (start time) Canberra time was overcast with high cloud, not bad if you are to be in the saddle for the 24 hours.
Andy started strong was keeping up with the big guns, coming in around 3rd or fourth behind some Canadian dude and Jason English.

The Worlds 24hr Solo Championships, 2010, Stromlo Canberra

Its less than 2 weeks away...... the biggest MTB race this year in Australia. For the time since it started 12 years ago, the 24 hours of Adrenalin World Solo Championships has finally left the shores of North America and come to Australia. CORC (Canberra off-road cyclists) have been awarded the rights to host the event. It has come to the right place with an aussie taking out the title last year (Jason English) and third place (Andy Fellows-Yeh!) and 2006 winner Craig Gordon just to name a few Australians competing this year.
Andy can't wait, just check out his blog and give your support. Greg Long and local customer Mark Whitney are so excited they have got track side tickets, to give Andy some local cheer and support.
Kim and Greg P, our mechanics have been working hard this week to get both of Andy's bikes race ready and they are now some mean looking fighting machines.

Boonah Marathon Results

The Sunshine Coast locals got awesome results on the weekend at the Boonah Marathon. They travelled to Boonah, south west of Brisbane to race in the 50km Lite course which included a mix of MTB bike trails, dirt roads and bitumen. It started at Boonah showgrounds and finished at the Wyaralong trails.
Local rider Dan O'Rouke came 2nd overall and first in his division (1:49:05) by only 5 seconds due to a last minute wrong turn. Jack Jude, riding for Cognition and Ay-Up lights came 2nd in his division (1:53:12) by 4mins and 12 seconds and came an awesome 4th overall. Jack is only 14 and was completing in the 18-29 division, this was an amazing feat.

Our other riders were good friends Garth Kellett (2:03:00) and David Whisker (2:06:01) placing 6th and 10th respectively in the 40-49 division. Great results guys those training rides in the Noosa trails really paid off.

The Sunshine coast time trial U15 team won 1st place at the State Championships last Sunday at Tent Hill Gatton. The boys previously did individual time trials and the fastest four secured a spot in the team. Jack Jude, Cognition's rider posted his best time and was second fastest on the day to gain his position in the team. In practice the team was averaging 45km per hour over a 10km distance, on a smooth road. However on the day at Tent Hill the course was very rough thus their average became 39.8km per hour this was enough to secure 1st place by 1 min 18 sec. When asked about the race, Jack's reply was "We had a great day and enjoyed riding together as a team"

Melbourne welcomes the 77th UCI Road World Championships

What a great opportunity for Australia to experience an awesome event such as this!
The World Championships will lure many of the best international riders to Australia as this event holds a great deal of importance and prestige, second only to the Tour of France.
The event will be held over 5 days of competition from 29th September to 3rd October and the competitors will include Elite Men and women and Under 23 Men's. Previous winners include: Lance Armstrong, Eddie Merckx, Greg Lemond Mario Cipollini and Australian Michael Rogers and Cadel Evans, current World champion.
This year there is a large field of Aussie riders trying to win on home soil, such as Cadel Evans, Michael Rogers and Simon Gerrans. Cadel has announced he is shaping up perfectly for the World Championships.

It's going to be an exciting time in Melbourne, there will be a buzz in the air.

What a Great Ride!

I decided to go for a ride this morning so after the girls and I rode to school, I kept on riding. I ended up in Cudgerie Estate, on Trail 6 in the Noosa Trail Network after a ride through Black Mountain. It was really beautiful in there, the single track was twisty and rooty which helped with practicing my tight cornering skills at speed. The air was fresh and clean from the rain and the birds were lovin' it. As I was taking in the forest, I wanted to share this with everyone, so I took some photos and as the old saying goes " a picture is worth a thousand words".

Mel and myself have just returned from an exciting 5 day trip to Melbourne.
After spending 5 days at Specialized's new world class facility my head is spinning and I am excited!!!!!
Mel went to the 2 day 2011 launch and I went to the launch and the core training session.

Specialized have just opened their Australian HQ in Melbourne including a school, called SBCU (Specicalized- Bicycle-Components-University). This facility is unique to Specialized and is one of the reasons that Specialized is the best bicycle company in the world.
The bicycle industry is ever changing, new technology, new ideas and new experiences drive it. In order to keep bicycle dealers informed Specialized developed SBCU.
I spent 3 days in an intensive training session. Specialized brought the best of their product mangers and SBCU professors over from the USA to help with the 2011 Product Launch and the 1st SBCU core class in the new Australian HQ facility.
The SBCU core class teaches everything from the differences in helmet construction to fibre lay-up, and of course the all important test rides. Riding the S-works Roubaix and S-works Stumpjumper was awesome and the all new Camber Elite, a super fun XC trail bike.
Specialized have gone all out, they have the most passionate, enthusiastic people, the best technology and provide the best service. They are helping us so that we can help you, our customers enjoy your ride. So come on in and share the passion that is uniquely Specialized.

Mel and Greg L trip to Melbourne for the 2011 Specialized Launch

Our trip to Melbourne was fantastic!.

The Cupcake Bakery

We arrived a day before the launch, so we wandered through the streets of Melbourne, soaking up the atmosphere and culture. We found the Cupcake Bakery which had every kind of cupcake available. (yes, we brought samples home for our girls). We also noticed the council ran bike fleet where people can hire a bike for $2.50/day or $50/year. It's a great way to get around the streets of Melbourne especially if your a tourist and didn't bring your bike.

The Specialized Dealer launch was held at the newly completed HQ. The facility was warm and inviting and the staff were filled with passion for cycling and their products.Specialized is the No1 bike Company in the world for a reason, the passion starts at the top with founder,owner and president, Mike Sinyard which then filters down through to his staff. He employes the best in each field to produce the best products. To hear the product managers talk was inspiring to say the least, to be part of the Specialized family is amazing.
We the dealers got an in-depth presentation on all their bikes and what makes them different and better than the rest. My favorite presenter was Rachel, the women's products manager out from the US. She spoke about the entire women's range, a very extensive range from MTB, road, commuter/fitness to hybrid.

It was cold, very very cold..at the Dusk to Dawn 12 hour

At the end of a hard night

It was cold and racing for 12 hours is really hard but everyone had lots fun. It was great to see Seb and Jack coming in with the fast guys in the opening lap. This set the stage for the rest of the race and encouraged their team mates to keep up the pace.This race was the most challenging event that all the juniors have done to date, it was an amazing effort, and we at Cognition are proud of them. For example, around 1am, Jack found himself finishing a lap with all his team mates asleep so headed out for 2 more.
The early hours of the morning were quite challenging when fatigue set in, it was the time when the support crew of parents were at their best, themselves fighting fatigue, as it had been a few years since they had done an all nighter.
Congratulations Seb, Ethan, Zac and Jesse, first place 4 person mixed team. While the elite Juniors finished an awesome third place in the hotly contested 4 man team; Declan, Rodger, Jack and Nathan- congratulations guys!

The Dusk to Dawn, 12hour, 7th & 8th August

Here's to another great weekend of racing with Dusk to Dawn 12 hour at Canungra, 30 minutes inland from the Gold Coast. What a fantastic MTB event with a twist, ride from dusk to dawn for 12 hours on a 8 km loop consisting of single track, switchbacks, fire roads and flowing down hills. The main sponsor of this event is Ay-Up Lights, lighting up the way.

Greg Pott's Trip to the States

Greg Pott had a great time learning all about the fantastic bikes and products that Specialized offers, and to do this in an awesome place was a dream come true. He got to play in the mountains and use the ski lifts to do some wicked downhill. He got to try out the downhill bike, Demo 8 II (2011 model) and his comments were " an amazing ride, the faster you go the smoother the ride got".

Next the day, he changed his gear and got on the road. He tried both the Tarmac SL3 2011 and the Roubaix SL3 2011, both "the best road bikes he had ever ridden"

The Tarmac SL3 is an competitive road bike which is extremely light and stiff while the endurance road bike, Roubaix SL3 makes a long ride comfortable and FAST.

Specialized Technology Dominates Tour

July 26, 2010 Morgan Hill, CA Every bike company dreams of winning the Tour de France: Specialized realized its dream and took it one step further, with Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck riding their Specialized bikes1-2 finish Sunday in Paris. This was the first-ever Maillot Jaune for the California company.
Of course there was also a wide array of Specialized equipment in the peleton, with riders on two teams sporting their brand new Prevail helmets, including grenn jersey winner Alessoandro Petacchi, and amy others using their shoes, saddles and various other accessories.

After many years of sponsoring Pro Tour teams, founder and owner Mike Sinyard was exuberant about the success of the teams (Astana and Saxo Bank) and riders with whom he's worked so closely for research and development on these bikes and equipment. He's also pretty psyched for the company!

"Winning the tour is a dream for us that has taken 36 years to come true" Sinyard said. 'It's clear example of successfully following our founding principle to focus on the riders need for technologically advanced products that provide true performance benefits".
With technology playing a bigger part in pro cycling every year, Specialized worked hand-in hand with the pros to dial in the perfect combination of ride feel and efficiency, resulting in the fastest, best-forming, most comfortable bikes possible. And unlike most companies who provide road and TT bikes, Specialized developed three different race-ready bikes for the event, specific to the ride experience of the day: Tarmac SL3 for road stages, Shiv for time trials, Roubaix SL3 for cobbleston- heavy stage 3.

The results speak for themselves:along with the overall podiums, Specialized enjoyed 5 individual stage wins, including two on the Shiv and three on a tarmac. The Shiv's unequalled combination of wind sclicing aerodynamics and road-bike handling allowed Fabian Cancellara to blow away the field in the race's two time trials.

The Tarmac, with its industry leading stiffness to weight ratio and race-proven geometry, helped propel Schleck and Alexandre Vinokourov to three dominant victories in the mountains.

Perhaps the biggest story, though, was the 2011 Roubaix SL3. After its early success this spring with the win at Paris-Roubaix, the riders appreciated its benefits over the cobblestones of stage 3.
"I not going to lose any sleep over Sateg 3" Contador said before the race. "The new bike(Roubaix SL3) Specialized has provided for me will be crucial"

Proving again that "smoother is faster", the Roubaix helped Contador and Schleck float over the brutal roads, gaining valuable time over their main rivals, and laying the groundwork for their eventual head to head battle for overall title.

In the gritty, down to the finish battle for the sprinter's green jersey, Petacchi put the Prevail helmet to the ultimate test....it passed with flying (green) colours! The best complete performance helmet proved its excellence in aerodynamics, fit, cooling-and of course protection-over three weeks of torturous conditions, from wind to heat to brutal, high speed crashes. And it always looked sleek and stylish-especially in full green on the Champs Elysees.

Top all that off with professional BG Fits and our sponsored athletes were able to push themselves beyond their limits, only to come back even stronger the next stage.

A Rainy Saturday Morning Ride

The Eager Mountain Bikers on Saturday

Well it was overcast and the threat of rain was there but that did not stop a bunch of mountain bikers going out and having some fun. Last Saturday our morning ride was full of adventurous people willing to enjoy the local bush even if it meant getting wet. The group was big enough to break up into 3 sub groups: the fast and furious, intermediate and the easy.

I went on the easy ride with Keely, my 6 year old and we both had lots of fun. There was a good mix of riders with kids and their mums, adults who wanted to take it a little easy and Jim, our oldest rider, at 80, all riding the tracks in Wooroi. Lester did a great job leading, helping us to explore with enough fire roads and down hills to keep everyone entertained. I was amazed and proud of Keely climbing the hills and riding straight through the mud puddles, picking the good lines and trying everything. By the time we got back to Noosa Outlook we had done 9.5kms and let me tell you, the chocolate muffin she got was well deserved. All five of the kids (3 girls and 2 boys- girls rule) had a great time, challenging themselves with the tracks around the old quarry and some fast fire road downhills.It's a great way to get the family out, have fun and get fit while meeting new people and getting to know your local natural environment.

There are some beautiful native shrubs flowering at the moment which brings some great colours to the bush landscape. I have included a photo of the track, weetie bix with the native shrub Hovea. I was riding the track one morning to work and just had to stop to take it in. I love to ride this track fast but sometimes it good to stop and smell the hovea!!!

Well done to our local government, Cr Vivien Griffiin, SCC, the head of the integrated transport systems portfolio and the team at TravelSmart for being a winner at the Bicycling Achievement Awards held by the Cycling Promotion Fund. These awards highlight cycling achievements throughout the community and the role it plays in supporting active living across all ages.
The Sunshine Coast Council won the Local Government Award for 'Special Initiative to Encourage and Promote Cycling'. Their vision is to be Australia's most sustainable region. We currently have 800kms of bikeways and over 13,000 hectares of parks and bushland. The council has committed $20 Million over the next 5 years for cycling infrastructure. Another initiative by the council has been the creation of a cycling reference group with representatives from state agencies, bicycle user groups and council staff which helps to set priorities for future cycling infrastructure improvements, education and encouragement programs and cycling policy direction for the region as a whole (CPF,2010, 2009 award winners, The Australian Bicycling Achievement awards website).

The 6 hour Goldrush Weekend

What a great weekend, everyone had a blast.

The weather was fine, if a little chilly on Saturday night, I'm sure it got below 5 degrees that night!!!!. The temperature did not bother the competitors for the night dirt dash... it was a action packed racing format. As the field was slowly culled to leave the final seven racers to compete for line honours.... in the elite division it was Aiden Lefmann first and Andy Fellows hot on his tail. It was great to watch.

When Sunday rolled around, everyone was keen to race, the weather was cool but dry ... perfect riding conditions. Everyone liked the course, some parts were really technical and challenging but it just made for better camp fire stories that night. The hill climbs and tight switchbacks were tough but it made the last 2-3 kms of downhill and sweeping corners awesome. The final stretch (named "Big Ring Fling") was perfect for that sprint home just flick it the big ring and let it rip. We had a great turn out from the Sunshine Coast, The Noosa Trailblazers and The Bushrangers MTB clubs. Check here for all the juicy results.

After making the rounds and chatting to people, it seems the weekend was a great success and it was a perfect way to spend a long weekend.

Mt Perry Gold Rush 6 hour- June Long Weekend

Well, its only a week away now..... six hours of pain, sweat and lots and lots of fun. Greg and Mel Long from Cognition are taking the girls and heading north for the weekend. Greg is going solo and Mel is taking it a little easier in a 3 person team with Cam and Paula (some Trailblazers buddies). Tara and Keely are keen to take their bikes though just going on a camping trip is pretty exciting!!. Word on the street or should I say the track is ... there is plenty of local Sunshine coast riders heading north for some great fun, lots of Noosa Trailblazers as well as other Cognition's customers. It will be a busy time in the shop this week with everyone gearing up for the race. The word is ... the competition between mates and fellow trailblazers is high... but really it's all about having a great time with your friends.

So the township of Mt Perry is located 100kms west of Bundaberg and Wolca Reserve (the actual venue of the race) is 6 kms north of Mt Perry. There is an area for camping which includes hot showers (ohh ahhh), flushing toilets (nice!), wood BBQs and most importantly, drinking water. There is also tank water for washing your faithful companion (ah that's your bike!!) so don't forget a bucket.

The weekend will be full of challenges. First the race itself, just check out the race profile, then the campers will be subject to early sunsets (due to the reserve being located in a valley), early frost and minimum temperatures ranging from 0 to 5 degrees. So if the race doesn't make to you tough the temperatures will!!!!!! The course is 11kms long with 245metres of ascent.... oh my gosh..... Last year the record for the faster lap was 27 minutes and 58 seconds who's up to beat that, I will certainly congratulate anyone who can beat that!!!!!.

Well the KWT Maxxis Sunshine Series is heating up with round 2 being run on the 30^th May. Local Trailblazers have notched up some impressive results in both rounds. Course conditions at Illinbah could only be described as very ugly after much rain in the Gold Coast hinterland on the Saturday. Stand out rides included Rodger Pogson Manning, 1^st u19, Declan Wharton 2^nd u 17 ( 3 laps in 63 mins) WOW!

Jack Jude and Nathan King both raced in the under 15's and came 1st and 3rd respectively. Other brave Trailblazers who tackled the mud were Lestar Manning, John King, Richard and Nicholas Dodds, Ki and Ron Hendrickson, Seb and Emil Vejby, Jesse Hill and Ethan Kelly. A total of 14 riders is a testament to the success of our local Club and the Saturday morning rides. Well done Boys. Next round is at Mt Cotton on the 20^thJune, but hopefully we will see you at Mount Perry next weekend.

April was a full cycling calendar month for me. The Sunshine Coast Cycling Club road racing season kicked off with the 50km Eudlo course, very undulating and finishing on a 17% climb aptly named THE WALL. I finished 5^th in B grade just ahead of Dad. A fortnight later I lined up at the Eumundi / Browns Creek road race, 60kms on another undulating course, with 2 sharp climbs. Another solid ride finishing 6^th in B grade loosing touch with the bunch at the road works on the last lap. (I had to stop at a red light for 5 minutes). I’ve also raced in two Junior Carnivals, Northlakes Brisbane and Nerang on the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast Cycling Centre at Nerang is a brilliant venue with a bitumen velodrome, criterium circuit encompassed by a challenging road race course, plus excellent MTB tracks in the 1752 hectare State Forest. Jealous yet? On the Mountain Bike scene it’s been Saturday morning training rides in Woori as usual. MTB competition wise the first event was the Avanti 6hr at Canungra. I teamed up with Rodger Pogson Manning and Seb Vejby and we had a great day’s racing. Our lap times were consistent and we finished 1^st in the 3 person teams. The 6hr Enduro is ideal for a team of 3 so get your buddies together and join us at Mt Perry on 12-14^th of June for a cycling challenge. This past Sunday was the first round of the MTB Sunshine Series at Mt Crosby. I was looking forward to racing again, and had a great race finishing 1^st in the under 15 age division making it a good start to the series. Keep riding and I’ll see you on the tracks soon.

First Round of Sunshine Series Mt Crosby, Done and Dusted

Well there was a great showing of the Noosa Trailblazers down in Brisbane last weekend for the 1st round of the Sunshine Series XC. There was some great results: Jack Jude took out first and Nathan King third in the under 15's, Emil Vejby coming in 8th. Seb Vejby came 2nd and Jesse Hill came 7th in the under 17's with Ethan Kelly at his first race came 9th in the same division. Nick and Josh Dodds both did well in the under 11's with a 4th and 9th respectively. Rodger Pogson-Manning stepped up to the under 19's but unfortunately flatted. David Whisker at his first Sunshine series XC race placed a very respectable 18th in the masters division.
Well done to all the riders, a great effort and showing for the club.
A final mention should be made to the crazy president who decided to do a long training ride..... over 200kms from Pomona to Mt Crosby to give support and encouragement to his fellow riders. Well done Greg!!!

May 2nd 6 hour Enduro at Canungra

What a great day of racing there was on Sunday 2nd May down at Benobble, Canungra located 40 minutes inland from the Gold Coast. The fine weather and the well organised event put on by Bill and Libby from Two Wheels promotions created a fantastic atmosphere for the riders who all had a great time. The track was just over 6 kms with approximately 200 metres of climbing per lap, it consisted of single track, switchbacks, fire roads and flowing downhill sections.

Cognition entered some of our top young guns in the 3 man school junior division. We had Roger Pogson-Manning, Jack Jude and Sebastian Vejby. The guys did an awesome job doing 14 laps not only taking 1st place in their division but their laps and time would of given them first place in the 3 man team division. What a fantastic achievement!

Noosa Trailblazers Soren Vejby, Lester Manning and Justin Thompson all had a great race too. Soren came 5th in the 2 man team with his friend Aaron, Lester (solo masters) pumped out 6 laps on his single speed and Justin (solo men) completed 9 laps before he got 2 flats in the 9th lap. Mud, Mud and more Mud!

We love seeing a mud covered face with a big white toothy grin....and we saw heaps of them on Saturday at the Noosa 000 12hour MTB challenge. What a day! You would be hard pressed to recognize your own brother or sister, everyone was mud from head to toe.

I heard one rider singing 'hey hey we're the monkeys' as he was leaving transition.

The race was on. With the week before giving us lots of rain the course was sure to be muddy. The first lap saw the closure of the 300m of single track and thus taking out the slippery climb after. Around midday, the race organisers shortened the lap by four kilometres putting everyone into the driest part of the course. The day brought more rain and more mud and more fun. At the Cognition tent, we were kept on our toes with a constant stream of shifting issues and Worn out brake pads, its no secret that mud is bad for your bike! By mid afternoon the organisers decided to call time at 5pm, giving everyone the chance to clean up in the light of day.

The 000 12 hour is a fantastic event supporting an equally fantastic cause. It was great to see so many out on the day supporting the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. Such an event does not happen without the help of volunteers. We would like to thank those who took the time to help. The SES for being out in the weather all day as Marshals, the Noosa trailblazers for helping with registration, timing and the setup and take down of the Cognition tent(we could not have done it without you) the PnC of the Pomona and Federal state schools for the canteen and the likes of Mark Whitney who I saw standing in line for the hose to clean the bikes of his mates who were racing...things like this went on all day.

We had lots of fun and will definitely be back next year.....

Noosa 000 12hr Mountain Bike Challenge Saturday 17th April

The wait is almost over... its this weekend that you can challenge yourself either solo or in a team on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. We have been out on the trails and they are looking good if a little wet but what's a mountain bike race without mud, a bit of blood and whole lot of sweat. The single track through the forest will test the riders who attempt it with speed, negotiating the slippery tree roots without taking down a tree or termite nest will be a test. There is a wicked fast track just before you get back to the gate (1st part of the course) this is where you can gain some time. The second part of the course has it's own obstacles with a large muddy bog and several water bars to manage. These have proven difficult for some. Know your limits and take care and you will have a blast.

Cognition is proud to be a sponsor of this great and worthwhile event. We will have a workshop tent there, manned by the best mechanics on the sunshine coast, the four of them will either be at the tent or racing on the course.

The camping and transition area is large and will accommodate campers as well as displays from some suppliers from the cycling industry. The local schools P & Cs will be catering for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday while there is local restaurants and take away's for Friday night or sunday morning. You can choose from Mannies (pizza and pasta), The Rock n Roll Cafe (60's style of burgers and fries), Chinese take away, Indian Restaurant(sit down only), local pub bistro and the Mountain Stop Cafe.
It could be a great weekend away or a great day of racing if you are local, whatever your fancy if you love mountain biking this is a great way to spend your day.

Well Done Guys... the results are in!

What a weekend of riding. Both Andy and Robbie did a fanastic job in the 2010 Australian Solo 24 Hour MTB Championships. Andy came first in his age group and second overall. Andy finished with 45 laps under his belt with the next two competitors finishing with 41 and 40 respectively. However the real race was between Andy and Jason English both eager to come away with the national jersey. It was with 3 hours to go that Andy put a move on, Jason immediately responded with a 27.30 minute lap to cement his lead and eventually pull out the win. Over the 24 hours Jason's average speed was 17.37 km/hr and Andy's was 17.05 km/hr - very close.
Robbie's successfully achieved his goals of 30 laps and qualifying for the worlds solo championships in October. He came 7th in the single speed category and 55th overall with an average speed of 11.35 km/hr. Robbie wanted to thank his good mate Ado from Dirt Works for great race support, all the single speed crew from Mal adjusted and Cognition for flawless bicycle performance. This Easter weekend both Andy Fellows and Robbie Paksec are heading down to Majura Pines Canberra to compete at the championships. Andy has already qualifed for the Worlds this year but Robbie is there to get qualification into the single speed category.
Andy has 20 riders in his division of Male 25-29yrs but his main competiton will be Jason English (2009 24hr Solo World champion)and John Blankenstein both in the male 30-34yrs divison. Both Jason and Andy have qualified for the worlds to be held later in the year at Canberra however there is still a few prizes up for grabs. 1st place not only receives the Australian Solo 24hr MTB Champions jersey awarded by MTBA, free entry to the 2010 world solo 24hr championships plus a complete solo pit row fit out including a marquee, power, lights, table and chairs, flooring and heater (and a bit of cash thrown in as well).

Farewell to a Great Aussie Champion- James Williamsom

By now the cycling community not only in Australia but the world has learnt of the tragic death of James Williamson, 2008 World Solo 24 Hour Champion. We at Cognition felt it was important to say a few words in respect of such a great rider.

James died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday night in South Africa after the 2nd stage of the 722km Adsa Cape Epic. Originally from NSW Southern Highlands, James moved to Canberra to study jouralism and public relations at the University of Canberra. While there he raced and trained with many of the local riders as well as giving up his time to coach the junior riders of the area.

His love of mountain biking and just being on his bike lead him to complete and win many endurance races and eventually becoming the editor of the Enduro Magazine. The year he became the world solo champion was the year he beat Tinker Juarez, the US favorite and lead a line of aussies onto the podium with 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th places going to the aussies(James Williamson, Jason English, Mark Fenner and Jeff Toohey- a sunshine coast rider and friend).
A post mortem examination revealed a serious undiagnosed heart ventricle problem that was a genetric condition. This was not caused by his riding if anything his fitness kept him stronger.

From all accounts James was a extremely well liked and respected man with many contributions going out to him, Such as the up and coming Australian Solo 24hr MTB championships this Easter weekend, riders will wear black memorial armbands.
Amazing man, amazing life, someone who will be sorely missed..

Jack's Road Season has Started!

Hi!

Well the MTB scene is going off! Saturday morning rides from Cognition have been exceptionally well supported with nearly 40 riders lately. WOW! This is quite an amazing roll up considering 2 years ago Dad, myself and Jackson Thorn were the only three riders for the first few weeks. Richard and Nicholas Dodds were soon onboard and we've grown from strength to strength ever since. The tracks in Wooroi have been very wet lately which has necessitated some Timbeerwah Look Out/ Cooroy Mountain return rides. Although these rides do not improve your MTB handling skills you can certainly work on your aerobic fitness. (silly single speeders spin session).

For those of you who cross train on road bikes you’ll probably know that the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club road season is underway. Seb Vejby, Rodger Pogson-Manning and I as pictured, all time trialed well enough to make “B” Grade. Rodger saddled up on Greg Long’s new GEARED steel road bike to post a very impressive time trial and placed 7^th in his first Crit race at Lake Weyba circuit. Last weekend was the 2^nd race of the Road season at North Arm. This was my 2^nd hit out in “B” grade. Jimmy Thompson and Sorren Vejby were amongst the competition in the 40km road race. Restricted gears for me, being under15 means a max roll out of 6 metres. Try it one day and you’ll know how I felt when it came down to the final uphill sprint finish. I placed 4^th and was very pleased with my performance. Next week is a Junior Carnival at North Lakes, Brisbane, so it’s early nights, lots of pasta and spin training for me this week. Safe cycling!

Another Win For Andy- Congratulations!

Andy has arrived home happy with another win under his belt. He has just completed the Bike Buller Festival on the weekend at Mt Buller, located in the Victorian high country. With 400 riders, a great resort and clear skies, the atmosphere was pumping. Andy loved the venue and recommends the tracks, with one a 13km trail descending down 1100 vertical metres from top to bottom.

The event was broken into 3 stages over 2 days:
1. Saturday morning: a 25km XC race around the village- Andy came 1st.
2. Saturday afternoon: The Super D- a 6km XC downhill course that drops over 500 vertical metres. Andy came 1st
3. Sunday: a gruelling 50km XC race to Mt Stirling and back - Andy came 2nd by 24 seconds.

The overall results were Andy in 1st place with a time of 4: 21: 18 averaging a pace of 20.21km/hr followed by Murray Spink 4 minutes later and Grant Lebbink taking the final podium position.
Tory Thomas won the open females convincingly followed by Louise Cook and Liz Smith rspectively.

Up and Coming Events with Cognition

March is a bumper month for cycling with Cognition and the Sunshine Coast. With the start of bike week on the 13th March, we are having a general overview bike maintenance class at the shop then the following Saturday, 20th March Greg will be presenting a hands on class on how to fit a flat. We are asking for the participants to bring their own bikes to practice on and build confidence working on their own trusty steeds. This workshop will include 2 free tubes but be quick to sign up as this class will be limited with numbers due to the hands on and practical nature of the workshop. Check below for dates and times.

In the week following Bike week, there will be an awesome opportunity to learn from an elite world champion, Andy Fellows with his 'Advanced Skills Clinic' at Wooroi State Forest . The duration of the course is 4 hours and will be ran over 2 days, Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th March from 4pm-6pm. Each participant will receive personalized instruction from Andy and a show bag to take home. The cost is $100.00 plus $15.00 MTBA day license (if you do not already have a license). This clinic will be limited to 6 people so if your keen, register your interest.

Sunshine Coast Bike week Saturday 13th March - Sunday 21st March

With the combined support from Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and Bicycle Queensland, the Sunshine Coast regional Council is staging some great events in Bike week, 13th-21st March, 2010. It will be a festival of all things cycling.....from learning 'How to Bunny Hop a Log' to a Bike Maintenance Workshop. There is Ride to work day (Thursday 18th March forTewantin and Nambour) and National ride to school day (Wednesday 17th March) to be involved in. Andy's Race

The Otway Odyssey has been referred to as the hard 100ker going around, boasting some killer climbs. It starts in Apollo Bay on the great ocean road and finishes up at the mountain bike mecca of Forrest. For me I find the 100ker format very challenging, it’s kind of like making a marathon runner do a 5km run. My body seems to respond better to the longer 24hr type events. All the same I still do enjoy smashing myself in a marathon race!

The race started at 7am with over 1000 riders nestling for a good start. The first section of the race was up hill, around 1hr give or take, by the time we had reached the middle of the climb I was sitting around 20^th place, riding my own race, trying to keep some fuel in the tank for later. The first feed station was at Forrest and 67km away, so 2 bidons on the bike and 1 rocket in the jersey made sure I made it to Forrest hydrated. From Forrest we headed out on a 20km single track loop, this was where I started to feel good, knowing that I would pay for it later I kicked it up a gear and started to hammer the trail. Picking up a few more places and notable names. Feed station 2 was at 87km and there we headed out on the Ay-Up Loop. This is where I started to fade, it was a long gradual dirt road climb, maybe 6 km long and in the direct midday sun. Not even my bidon of coke could pick me up, eventually making it to the top, we descended a super gnarly single track that followed an exposed ridgeline, popping back out on the dirt road and eventually the finish. 5:09, was the time and 14^th was the place. Very happy.

Highlights were the steep, long, steep climbs. The sweet technical single track, the wide open fast descents and the cold beer at the finish line.

Well from all accounts the race was hard and challenging and Andy did a fanastic job..... Andy placed 14th coming home in 5hr 9mins . The race itself was probably a little short for Andy as he likes anything that's 12- 24 hours, so coming in 25 minutes behind the winner was great achievement... Congratulations Andy!

The full results were:
1st Adrian Jackson, 4hrs 44mins, he had been seeded 8th and came 4th last year. Adrian is a seasoned XC and multi day racer.
2nd Lachlan Norris, 4hrs 46mins is a road specialist.
3rd Craig Gordon, 4hrs, 48mins is a former World 24hr champion and Noosa Enduro winner.

The women's results were:
1st Judith Arndt, 5hrs 49mins who is a road racer and Pursuit Olympic medalist.
2nd Katherine O'Shea, 5hrn 54mins, a national series race winner who is aiming for the Australian team for 2012 Olympics.
3rd Peta Mullens, 6hrs 1min.
and local Sunshine Coast rider Naomi Hansen coming home in 4th place with a time of 6hrs 3 minutes- Well done Naomi!

Andy has a very busy racing calendar this year and he has started brilliantly. His results have been outstanding with a 1st place at the Lunar 8hr and a 1st overall in a team of 2 for the Sydney 24hr, Andy partnered with Sean Bekkers also a Tomac sponsored rider.
Andy's next race is this weekend, the Otway Odyssey 100km with 15% bitumen, 14% unsealed road, 36% fire road or double track and 35% single track. It starts on the Victorian coast at Apollo Bay and finishes at Forrest, the town known for mountain biking. There will be some tough competition with the likes of Craig Gordon, Murray Spink (Australian Marathon Champion) and Jason English ( Australia's reigning 24 hr solo MTB world champion) however this is nothing new to Andy as he came 3rd behind Jason in the worlds last year.

Noosa OOO Mountain Bike Challenge

This is an MTB bike race with a difference.... you get to have lots of fun with your mates while the money goes to a great charity, Working Wonders for sick kids. The race is on Saturday April 17th from 8am to 8pm in Pomona on the Sunshine Coast, the very same town that is home to the Noosa Enduro 100km MTB race. The Sunshine Coast District Police will be co-ordinating the race from the Pomona State School with plenty of room for camping on Friday and Saturday nights with amenities available. The site is close to town giving access to a supermarket, bakery, pub, takeaways and cafes. There will be limited catering so it is highly recommended to bring your own sustenance for the challenge.
The event will be open to solo riders and teams of 2, 3, 4 and 6 with each rider or team completing as many laps of the 12km circuit as possible within the 12 hours. All this for only $60 per rider.
Cognition will be there with on site mechanics and supplies to keep you in the race, we are proud to support such a great cause and look forward to seeing you on the day.

What a show it was!. Local Eumundi collector and Sunshine Coast BMX club member,Troy Phillips put on a great vintage BMX Show and swap meet last Sunday, a lot hard work, love and sweat went into putting this show together. Even the heavy rain and thunder could not dampen spirits or the buzz from the crowd. Check out the pictures below for some amazing models that have been restored. The mega raffle was popular with there being lots of prizes for the guys that showed off their restored beauties. The major giveaway,a brand new Retro Haro BMX donated by Cognition was won by a father and son team. The club did a great supporting the event, congratulations and well done to everyone involved.

Jacks Adelaide Report

In this blog I will be explaining what dad and I did on our recent trip to Adelaide where I competed in the Australian mtb championships.

Day 1(Wednesday 13th of January 2010). Dad and I had to wake up at 4am to catch a bus to Brisbane airport with a stop over in Sydney for 2 hrs before flying to Adelaide airport which is 20km from the national mtb championships track. After picking up our hire van from the airport we drove to the Caravan Park at Mt Barker which is a historical township in the Adelaide hills. Having packed for expected hot weather we didn’t take many warm clothes, so we were surprised by the very cool evenings which we encountered, hence our first night in the van was restless.

Day 2(Thursday 14th of January 2010).
XCO practice day at Eagle on the hill Mtb Park. The track starts off in a quarry which as you can imagine is hot and dusty. Within 200m from the start you are already climbing a set of eight single track switch backs, you then go under the down hill course and down a steep hill leading into more downhill flowing single track which spits you out onto a fire road before hitting the first feed zone. After the feed zone there is a bunch of fast downhill berms. You climb up a rugged rocky technical section before crossing the finish line you then have to do the whole 8.5 kilometres all over again. After 2 practice laps I felt fairly confident apart from the constant fear of flatting on such a rocky course.

Day 3(Friday 15th of January 2010)
Today is race day and I am feeling nervous but quietly confident. My race plan is to go to the front and try to hang in. BANG!! The race is on and it was a sprint to the front and I came 3rd up until a very tight switch back section where my competitors tried to ride a very tight rocky hairpin they were having difficulties so I bailed off and ran to the lead. Half way into the first lap it became apparent that I couldn’t maintain this pace so I reluctantly allowed 5 riders to pass. Unfortunately I lost contact with these individuals and rode the remaining lap solo. This was my first national championship race, and I gave it my best shot. I feel privileged to have had this fantastic opportunity to compete at such a level. This was no Saturday morning Wooroi ride with a bakery stop to follow. My competitors were brilliant riders who hammered full on for 50 minutes. They were all very deserved of their placings.

Day 4(Saturday 16th of January 2010)
On Saturday I was fortunate enough to ride within three bike lengths of Lance Armstrong on my mtb bike averaging 35km\h. I had to jump some gutters to get into this brilliant position but oh what a buzz being at the front of the peleton in such famous company. There was a turnout of over 5,000 cyclists who were going on this 40km ride. Later that day dad and I also took advantage of the bike paths along the Glenelg beachfront. Adelaide is quite a bike friendly city with many flat bike paths in town itself. Other cycling options include the climb out of town up into the ranges toward eagle on the hill on designated cycle pathways.
If you’re a roadie in Adelaide you’ve got the magnificent Barossa Valley to explore, but don’t expect to have the roads to your self in Tour Down Under month, this is Australia’s Tour De France and attracts cyclists galore.

Day 5(Sunday 17th of January 2010
This was our last day in Adelaide and Dad wasn’t leaving without getting up close and personal with all the action of the Tour Down Under Prologue. Whilst I managed to get into the bike polo scene and play with the local lads, dad was roaming around the start line of the TDU Prologue. He saw all the teams being introduced to the thousands of fans and watched the 25 lap race around the main streets of Adelaide. All in all we had a brilliant few days and we shared some fantastic time together. Dad says that if you can’t afford to go to the Tour De France you should visit Adelaide for a similar experience down under style. Live the ride, love the ride, Jackylegs.

Jacks Gone Racing

The Australian National Mountain Bike Championships are being held in Adelaide, South Australia this weekend and Jack is on his way. Jack and his dad, Chris have packed up the bike and headed down south. With the track seeing conditions of extreme heat and then rain and mud Jack should be in for heaps of fun! Best of Luck Jack!
This weekend's race will see Kim Bishop ( our great Mechanic ) and his brother Robin racing the downhill event, all the guys are in top form and will do well. Stay tuned for updates.

Jackylegs, hard at it

November has been a hot month both on and off the bike. Abnormally hot spring weather has ensured early morning training rides are enjoyable. My dad swears by 5am starts because of our subtropical sunshine coast weather, I think he’s right if you’re a morning person.
THE 4 HOUR AT MOUNT COTTON REPORT
A talented field of local mtb’rs lined up on Sunday 15th November for four hours of pleasure and pain in 30+ degree heat. As to be expected the track was very dusty with lots of uphill, downhill, technical sections and bridges to test individual riders. Local riders included Andy Fellows, Clint Pearce, Rob Paksec, Greg Long, Lestar Manning, Garth & Dave(team trail blazers) Rodger Pogson-Manning & I( team Cognition)

Andy Fellows had a great ride in the Elite division but was pipped at the post by Andy Mallet by a mere 10 Seconds after a furious battle for 4 hours.

Clint Pearce was riding his new titanium ‘Carver’ but unfortunately fell victim to 2 flats on the first lap, bad luck buddy.

Robbie (coopers) had a great win over Greg Long in another cat and mouse battle of the single speeders. These two can post amazing lap times that most multi geared men are envious of.

Lestar Manning was in great form and looking forward to finishing a race without any problems but a BIG GUY fell down a hill onto his wheel and turned it into a taco.

Garth & Dave also had mechanical problems in the form of a puncture but were able to complete the course in a P.B time.

Rodger (flathead) and I (jackylegs) were coming 7th until an unfortunate flat from flathead, but having had an extraordinary amount of flats in the past he changed it with great expedience and we finished a credible 9th in the open two man team (certainly the youngest combined team) we both clocked some very quick lap times, so we were personally delighted with our overall placing.

My next scheduled MTB race is on Jan 15, 2010 at Eagle Park, Adelaide where the Australian XCO Championships will be held. I’ll be competing in the under 15 year division in the Olympic cross country course and will race for approx 1 hour on what is reported as a world class venue ,I only hope it’s not excessively hot as it has already been this season. My training programme is on target and I feel I’m riding stronger than ever. I’m looking forward to the challenge of an Australian Assault.

Last Saturday night dad and I were fortunate enough to witness Harry and Matt Bush race BMX at Landsborough. What a great track for spectators and an action packed programme. Both Harry and Matt are regular Saturday morning Trailblazers, they’re the two who are air born most of the time, after seeing their BMX skills it all fits. These boys are both highly ranked and super competitive riders. I would highly recommend you attend a BMX event as it’s an adrenalin rush just being a spectator. School holidays are just a week away, so I am looking forward to getting out in the mornings for longer rides. If you see me out there make sure you say hi.

Malvern Star is an Australian icon which was created in 1902 by Tom Finnigan in Malvern, a leafy inner east suburb of Melbourne, Australia.
Malvern Star created it's own history when in 1928, Sir Hubert Opperman, the first ever Australian to ride the Tour de France rode upon a malvern star. He later went on to win the famous Paris-Brest-Paris race 1931,in doing so, "Oppy" set a new record time for the event.
Now the latest Malvern Star legend design has been refined in collaboration with Phil Anderson, one of the legends of Australian cycling (the first Australian to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, and proud ambassador of Malvern Star). He has road tested the current legend through rigorous conditions and has provided a rider's input to analyse the bike and the overall performance.
The Oppy frame was developed around the principle of a "complete design". The frame is built one tube at a time to ensure quality and to allow each tube to be designed to optmise its purpose within the frame. It then comes together with a chemical bond and bound with layers of carbon. Strict quality control checks are done at every stage, including weighing and cross checks for frame alignment.

Hello again,
Well October was a busy month for me as I picked up my new Scott addict R2 road bike. This bike is everything that one can expect from a high-performance carbon machine. Light, responsive, nimble and climbs like a goat. It’s also red so it makes you go faster. During October my training program has included group road rides with a local Noosa group. I have been training Tuesday, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Together with Saturday morning mtb rides from Cognition with a bakery stop after. The mid week rides are generally around 45 to 50 kms. The Sunday road rides have included such locations as Cootharaba range road reverse, Pomona, Cooroy west and home through Nandrorya rd via Cooroy. The average speed on these rides hovers between 28 to 30 km/hr. I feel these weekend longer rides are improving my overall speed and endurance. On occasions I do Gyndier drive hill repeats for general climbing practice. These hill repeats vary from spinning in the saddle to higher gear output out of the saddle power efforts. I’m sure this intense training will pay off when I team up with Rodger Manning to compete in the Mt Cotton 4 Hr on 15th November. Rodger has also been training hard and he’s an extremely strong individual rider as he proved in the recent 6hr event. Another exceptionally talented rider both mtb and road is 15 year old Seb Vejby who occasionally joins our Saturday morning social group. Seb did the Noosa tri in the under 19 team, winning silver. All three boys are brilliant at there chosen field. Seb's ride time for the 40 Km course was about 1 Hr 3 minutes. Wow, what a brilliant ride on restricted gears .It’s quite amazing just how much talent is in our local ranks. Next month I’ll have some race reports, until then pedal, pedal, pedal and love the ride. Six pack Jack

On Saturday 14th November at 2.30pm Cognition together with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council are holding a Travel Smart Bike Maintenance workshop at Cognition. If you have ever had trouble looking after your bike or not sure what to do, then come along, it's free. Greg Long, part owner of Cognition, can help you develop your maintenance skills. His vast experience and knowledge coupled with his friendly and outgoing manner will leave you with the confidence to look after your trusty steed.

Come along and be one of the first to enjoy and experience trail 7 (to Lake Macdonald) and trail 8 (to Cooroy), they consist of fire trails with a mix of single tracks. What a great way to commute from town to town - OFFROAD.
The day begins at Noosa Showgrounds from 6.30 am to 7.15am for registration. The following rides are available:
7:30 am Experienced mountain bike riders depart: 22 km mountain bike ride on the new trails, with some road riding
8:00 am Easy mountain bike riders depart: 7 km easy mountain bike on the new trails

Jack's New Training Aid

The past 4 months have seen some huge improvements in Jack. He has set himself some serious goals and is putting in the hard yards, on the bike and on the trainer. Last Sunday I was awarded the Bushranger Club Champion Trophy, after a gruelling 2hr 30 min (approx 45kms) bash through Mapleton State Forest. This award was an accumulation of general participation and consistent race results in the Sunshine Series, Noosa Enduro and the Bushrangers own Rumble in the Jungle. Unfortunately I flat tyred at the 2009 under 15 State Championships at Rockhampton but fellow Noosa Trailblazers shone by winning their respective categories.

Nathan King won the under 13 Qld XC Championship and Nickolas Dodd won the under 11 XC Championship. Rodger Manning also fell prey to multiple flat tyres in “Rocky” so we’re both in the market for tubeless tyres. Until next time, Love the Ride.

Hi! I'm Jack Jude and this is my first blog for the new Cognition web site. I would first like to thank Greg, Greg, Mel and Andree, owners of Cognition for their sponsorship. My main aim is to keep you up to date with my busy cycling schedule. For those of you who are interested I'll cover topics such as results from Cross country MTB and road racing events, personal training programmes, latest equipment updates and forthcoming events.

Let me introduce myself, I'm a 13 year old Tewantin resident who attends year 8 at Noosa District High School. In the past I've enjoyed a sporting background which has included soccer, touch football and tennis but my real passion is mountain biking. My first real off road mountain bike adventure consisted of cycling down Spectator Track in Wooroi State Forest with my dad and a couple of my mates, when I was 8 years old. Back then I was on a 20" Huffy that was as heavy as. The thought of cycling up that track was not even on the horizon. As the years progressed and the equipment improved, I now enjoy all the technical challenges Wooroi presents.

Come and check out the light and sexy Tomac Carbide SL, this is the actual bike that was tested and reviewed in the September issue of Australian Mountain Bike Magazine. Supersports, the Australian distributors of Tomac asked the boys at Cognition to build it up for the review. Greg Pott, owner and workshop manager did a great job, with the bike getting one of the highest ever ratings of 9.1. This is another example of the quality of workmanship that comes out of Cognition's workshop and why they are known as the best mechanics on the Sunshine Coast.

Sign Up For Noosa Trailblazers MTB Club

Cognition proudly sponsors the new Mountain bike Club located in the northern end of the Sunshine Coast. This club evolved from the regular 7am morning ride from Cognition. It developed into a "father and son ride"where a core group of about 16 riders would turn up every Saturday, rain, hail or shine, even in the middle of winter. However its not limited to guys only, they now have a "father and daughter team" joining the ranks.
Vice President of the club, Richards Dodds, said in a recent article in the Noosa Journal, "previously there were no clubs or organisations for mountain bike riding on the northern end of the coast, and none on the coast that catered for families with kids. So the owner of Cognition, Greg Long (President), Lester Manning (secretary) and I pushed around the idea of starting a MTB club." They have now become affiliated with the national governing body, Mountain Bike Australia, and thus the Noosa Trailblazers Mountain Bike Club was born.
The club is family-friendly, as the parents want to spend time with their kids doing something they all love however at the same time they are keen to see all riders join whether they have yet to start a family or their kids have already left the nest. The club is primarily a social group with some enjoying racing and competing in events that can take them around the great southeast. Richard and the club is keen to support these riders as it may lead all the way to the olympics.
Sign On : Sunday, August 23rd, 8-10am, at the bottom car park on Gyndier Drive, Tewantin. There will be a sausage sizzle too. For those who cannot make it membership forms are available from Cognition.

Thanks for the work at Trail Care Saturday 15th August 2009

Well done and a big thank you for everyone who turned out for Trail care last weekend. The large group worked on the track called "Snake", in Wooroi, Tewantin's State Forest under the guidance of the local ranger, Nat Smith. This shows with the community's help and the expertise of our rangers the trails in the forest will be fun and sustainable.
Local businessman and owner of Bike on, Roger Newton was there lending a hand as usual, he has played a large part in the continuation of trail care. The new mountain bike club, Noosa Trailblazers had a huge turnout of their members to help and get their hands dirty. Greg Pott, owner of Cognition was there enjoying the sun and making a rock garden for us all, trail riders to enjoy.
If you are interested in coming along to the next trail care day or would like to know more about the trails in Wooroi just drop into Cognition on St Andrews Drive and have a chat with Greg, Greg, Kim or Mel.

The Noosa Enduro is over for another year....

The 2009 Noosa Enduro has been run and won!. What a fantastic day!. Congratulations to Hamish Elliot for a great race and his 2nd Enduro win. It was great to see Hamish and his Rockstar Racing team mates in Noosa again.

Team Cognition had a great showing with a first place in the elite teams division with Ian Cuthbertson placing third, Andy Fellows placing 7th and Clint Pearce (with a broken chain) placing 9th. Check race results here to see where you or your favorite rider placed.
Pomona saw some great weather though it was possible to find some wet sand which caused havoc to many drive trains. Chain suck was the order of the day and we had lots of riders in need of a relube at the 30km checkpoint 1.

A great day was had by all. USM put on another top event, the weather was wonderful, the venue had a good vibe and everyone had a good time. We look forward to Noosa Enduro 2010.
